@Haven - maybe. Sometimes, though, the amount of antagonism really does seem to imply that people are aiming to strike at the player and not the character, even if it's thinly veiled by RP. I know in the situation with Daskalos, I was drunk and Llok and I were in Skype hurr hurring about him being upset. It was my worst troll moment and, at the time, there was this rush of glee over upsetting him. Amusement, power, us feeding off each other to encourage each other. Looking back I'm pretty ashamed, but. Eh. There you go. A bit of troll insight.

I don't think him LEAVING HIS CITY is an any way a valid response - we were immature unicorns and things escalated beyond what was cool and became toxic. People shouldn't be forced into situations where they feel like they have to leave their city or put people on ignore simply because someone is being that aggressive with their "roleplay." I've been the bad guy, I've been a crappy player, and I know that it's damn easy to get caught up in just focusing on yourself and your own fun and shrugging off the play experience of others, telling yourself platitudes like "it's just RP" or "they should toughen up."

RP stories aren't RL stories, but RP doesn't exist completely divorced from reality. We, the players, create it, and experience it. It's really easy for someone being a jerk to just make things unfun, and maybe they can justify it to themselves by saying it's all IC but that doesn't make it any more enjoyable to experience.

  • @Jensen maybe a little.

Honestly, though, I think that there are plenty of people who go out of their way to make things miserable for people they don't like, or even people they don't really care about because it's funny. I hear tell that that's what the most recent extermination stint really boils down to, considering there's not really any attempt on their part to respond to attempts to turn it into actual conflict.

Ultimately, there's a very problematic disregard for the experience of our fellow players. I'm not sure if it is due to the lack of overarching conflict mechanics that have a real impact, the polarization of the game, or something more insidious. That said, I don't think it's the lack of conflict mechanics so much because I remember how vile war webs used to get...

  • I've got a log that I won't post here, partially because it reveals my ( not really secret ) alt and partly because I assume people will bitch. But one read will show you -exactly- what the prevalent attitude and atmosphere is in at least one guild. Extermination intent clear. Thin IC veil: check, continue movement.

Hit me up if you're interested.

Idk I still manage to get along with trolls too. Do I understand the frustration of being enemies with people who really don't care? Totally, but you gotta just take it with a grain of salt, brush them off as insignificant, and remind yourself of what in this game is fun.

As a general rule, never attribute something to OOC malice that can be explained as IC behavior. If it's something a character might reasonably do, don't focus on your reaction as a player or think that it's about you as a player, chance are it's not anyway.

I also don't like it when people talk about their "RP being ruined". I personally, don't think RP even can be ruined in that sense. Things can change, things can go in different directions, things can turn out in ways you might not have wanted, but they can't really be ruined. It's all RP. Some players seem to think that their RP exists separate from the rest of Aetolia, and they get mad if you do things they don't approve of as players. It's not a good attitude to go into any role playing with.

  • Agreed with Meph. You want to rp separate from Aetolia? Take it to your haven and leave it there. Outside, you're fair game.

Unfortunately, it happens. I'm inclined to give people the benefit of the doubt though when it comes to how characters are portrayed since I believe genuine trolls are generally in the minority. If anything is to be done in that sort of situation, I think the best course of action is to just speak up OOC about something bothering you so they know and or ultimately walk away to resume enjoying yourself elsewhere. Which is what, by the sounds of it, Daskalos did.

I dunno... Maybe it's just me but I think we, as roleplayers, have certain responsibilities to ourselves and by extension others that we can't just ignore. There's a distinct difference between a crappy player and someone who plays an antagonistic and troublesome character.

I was always told it was identical to gravehands\unholy chains and that both were 50\50, that the only diff was piety lasted longer (and that's the reason it's trans vs gifted for gravehands) @Oleis?

I'm not saying that piety hits more than the others. Last time we tested, both of them hit more, I think.

Yeah, just tested it again with @Mazzion and @Aryanne. These are the results:

With Mazzion and me: 68 piety procs out of 100 movement attempts.

With Aryanne and me attempt #1: 58 piety procs out of 100 movement attempts.

With Aryanne and me attempt #2: 39 piety procs out of 68 movement attempts. (Botched cause Gravehands interfered with this test.)

With Aryanne and me attempt #3: 61 piety procs out of 100 movement attempts.

So since each trial is independent, has only two outcomes, there's finitely many trials, and there's a fixed success rate (presumably), then we have a Binomial distribution! So the odds of Daskalos being wrong can be calculated by the formula , or about 99.9997%.
