  • I too, for a brief moment, thought it happened to me. That's how shattering it was to my marauding ego. :(
  • I feel like this is relevant.

A few weeks ago Sweden had one of those terrible crimes happen, where someone stepped in to a school and killed people. It was horrible and the kind of thing you don't think will happen in such a small and quiet country like mine. It did though, and it got everyone on edge.

Today I come to work at my school and the first I'm told is that yesterday there was an incident between two students where one had brought a knife and threatened the other with it. Seriously, these things are not supposed to happen. School is a place where you should feel safe and learn how to become better at things.

You are a smart and kind person @Teani - The best we can do as educators, mentors...or even people is set an example and have empathy for one another, as a teacher you have an amazing tool to reach out to kids and even adults who have dealt with demons within themselves and to help make this world a better place. I am very sorry to hear that something has happened in a country where we as Americans think is one of the safest places in this world, so I can only imagine how it would make you feel.

Stay positive and be that bright star in the darkness

We gotta start with each person to make this a safer and better world, -hugs- for you

This might just be me, but I have no faith in the educational system or schools anymore. Reason being, is that you hear so much about school shootings/stabbings/bullying/children committing suicide because of said bullying. I see very few students actually retaining anything more than how to mean, cruel, or that they need to make themselves feel pretty for some person they don't even truly like. As it is, my brothers and sisters who are home schooled, have seemed to retain and learn more things from the 4 years of being home schooled than they ever really learned in the last 4 years of public schooling... and they're far safer being home schooled than being at public schools.

@Aarbrok: Yeah, I always try my hardest to be a positive influence. That is, after all, part of why I'm doing what I do! We had a crisis team set up to speak to all the students involved or related to the knife incident, but down-played it as much as possible outside of school because if it's spoken of things get blown out of proportion. Everything seems to have run smoothly and the students still feel safe coming here.

On a different note, I've been a resource teacher in a class for new arrivals (young refugees arriving from Somalia, Syria and Afghanistan mostly) whenever I've had time to spare from my busy schedule. They're an awesome bunch even though they have lived through trauma that would shake most adults. One fled on a boat from Africa to Europe, huddled in the engine room with a bunch of others, not knowing if they might possibly sink or be forgotten. Another walked for days with his brother across the border to the neighboring country only to fall down, exhausted when he couldn't walk anymore. A car came by, but only had room for one more body, so the elder brother put his exhausted little brother (14 years old) on the truck and kept walking alone. The younger made it here, to Sweden, but has no idea where the brother is or if he's even alive. Today another one of the kids came to me, giving me a hug, saying he might be transferred to a different town. He was -just- settling down here, getting friends and getting integrated into an ordinary class. We're fighting tooth and nail to keep him here where he feels safe, rather than have them send him elsewhere because there's so little room for all the refugees. I'm just hoping he's there tomorrow. :frowning: At least he's not being sent back to Afghanistan.

Sometimes these kids lash out in school, talking too much, crying because they miss their family and friends, getting angry over little things, and all you can do is be there, as a steady rock to lean on and tell them it's alright. They're safe now. Then something like the knifing happens, and you have to start rebuilding things again. It's tough work, but I'm glad I'm there to help. I wish more would, rather than get nervous about something new and unfamiliar getting close to them.

You're good people @Teani - It is a scary world right now we can only do our best to try and make it better.

  • I'm angry/stressed that I have to find out about my Dad's health status primarily on facebook. I have friends from high school who ask me if I know how my Dad is doing.

It's draining to have a family member sick, especially when anything that can go wrong essentially will. I want to help and can't because I'm away at school, so it's just a big cycle of stress and anxiety. The positive side is that my Dad, who never took his health very seriously, has made major changes in his diet. He'll have a lot of challenges, but maybe his latest stint in the hospital has scared him straight. For a person with diabetes, changes to the diet can make a big difference. Positive vibes.

  • I can relate, @Eydis. Today, I found out that my dad was in the hospital from Saturday night to monday evening after not having been able to Breathe. He just doesn't tell anyone when something happens and that scares me. What if something really did happen and me or my sister couldn't be there with him?
  • Getting asked to call my mother Sunday night after work. We are flying there in three weeks for the holidays, so I thought it was pertaining to that.

No. She just casually bombs me with the fact that she has multiple tumors in her uterus. And that is all she knows till she does to see a specialist. Her regular OBGYN won't even talk to her more about her test results other than that.

Its just now starting to sink in. I want my mom. And I am 2000 miles away.

Sending good energy out to your mum....
Fingers crossed everything will be alright.

  • Hugs to you.. I would want my mom in a situation like that too. Sending all the positive thoughts I can in your and your mom's direction.

  • I got a shot in my ass and 0 hours of sleep last night. Pretty sure I almost OD'd on w/e pain killers I could find. Finally passed out due to exhaustion after 7 am this morning. My ass hurts and I'm still kinda loopy and I'm terrified to eat or drink anything because whenever I think about eating or drinking I remember how much pain my mouth was in last night.

So in the last day or two, I started getting spammed with text messages about my bang buddy alerts and instant sex results. I'm not sure if some account of mine got hacked somewhere, or if someone else just put a random phone number into some kind of sketchy site while they were registering for something and didn't want to use their own or what, but it's annoying and I'm pretty sure a woman sitting next to me in a waiting room saw one come in this morning and read at least some of it. She gave me a very judge-y kind of look. I'm hoping it turns out to be something harmless rather than a hack, but it's still annoying.

This is just fucking perfect.... on top of my keyboard fucking breaking itself and unable to personally fix it due to the fact that Asus tied in a fucking keyboard with the stupid touchpad.... my office document file which had all my Aetolia stuff in it that I made when I first started playing (artifact cr purchases/xp listings/ylem and lesser tracker) fucking ate itself. And because Win8 is such a god damn piece of shit, I have no shadow copies to fucking restore it from. Fuck you Windows and fuck this laptop. -.- Such fucking bullshit.

Everything just keeps wanting to fucking break on me, I'm half tempted to just snap my fucking laptop in 2 and break everything in my god damn apartment. At least if everything is fucking broken, nothing else can fucking break.

That's why I keep EVERYTHING I do that I want to keep backed up, either physically on a USB drive or using a free cloud service such as Dropbox. I'd suggest you learn from this and BackupBackUpBackup. Before I learned to backup I had an issue where my computer literally self-destructed, smoke and all, and I lost very important data (That ended up losing me quite a bit of money for losing). It was at that point that anything that I needed not to die, I have two backups of; A USB Drive and Dropbox. I mean, yes. there could be an issue that both wiped my USB drives and rendered me unable to use Dropbox but it's unlikely. I would suggest you learn from this problem rather than doing the same thing again.

Waiting for results back to see if I have testicular cancer or not (Yes, I am a guy, this is the internet after all.)
I am trying my best to not panic too much but it is getting increasingly hard, I meet with the doctor tomorrow afternoon, and hope I can return with a love instead of a mad.

@Avishai : A friend of mine had that two years ago (most kinds are relatively benign when it comes to testicular cancer). He's fully recovered now. Still, I send a hug and wish you good luck. *hugs*

Thank you @Teani and @Aryanne - It has been a weird day, more ultrasounds, lots of bloodwork, I go back to the doctor tomorrow after they discuss with the Oncologists and hopefully I have better news. For now its still a mad, cause I dont have any definitive answers. Aetolia is the best support group, I swear it.

  • Got my car back from the shop 2 weeks ago, just got a massage Monday, today is my last day at work before a 2 week vacation....

Was rear-ended on my way in to work this morning -_-

    Bright sides:
    • Car still drives
    • Despite being the wettest month on record (which is doubly remarkable when you live in a place known for being rainy) it was amazingly NOT raining at the time so I didn't have to slough through the rain to swap info.
    • The guy was very nice and apologetic (totally his fault, hit me at a red light)
    • I can now refute the smart-car-easily-demolished joke from personal experience
    • I might be able to get my very-out-of-wack neck treated with insurance now
Overall, not ruining my day, but still a bit of a bummer.

  • HadrakHadrak Dorohedoro
Sick. Again. I just wish I could stop feeling so run down.

  • MarienaMariena By a lake.
I wrenched my neck a month back, it was bad enough I went to outpatient services, where they gave me an xray and muscle relaxers. Before that I had bloodwork come back with high thyroid functions on one of the tests (t3 or t4), just one was high out of three, but they wanted me to get an MRI to be safe. The good news is that the MRI showed that my neck wasn't fucky from me hurting it before this. The bad news was that I had a nodule on my thyroid. Seemed fairly small at the time, 1.5 cm or so.

SO, they say 'go get an ultrasound'. I get THAT and now the thing's 2.38+ cm in size, and it is multi-nodular. I don't have any symptoms of hyper-hypo-thyroidism, but clearly something ain't right. THEREFORE, on the 18th I have an appt with an ear, nose, and throat specialist so he can look and determine if they want a biopsy or if I need thyroid medication and where my thyroid bloodwork is at, etc.

Kinda scary, wish it wasn't in Janruary, but it's coming closer.
