How do you pronounce things?

There's probably a lot of variation out there (which is a function of most written mediums), so I'm curious as to how everyone pronounces different things in the game! I.e. character names, organizations, lore stuff, etc. I think there was a thread about this before, but it's super old.

I'll start!

Iselle - eye-ZELLE, with a similar "s" as the one in "Isadora" or "Isabelle"

Bahir'an - buh-HERE-rahn
Nebre'seir - NEH-bruh-seer
Ve'kahi - vuh-KAH-hee
D'baen - duh-behn (Frenchish way)

Abhorash - AB-hor-rash
Chakrasul - ends up chack-russell in my head, which I can't stop now

Indorani - in-DORE-ran-nee
Sentaari - sen-TAR-ree

Grecht - grekt
Tsol'aa - tuh-SOLE-lah (I am positive this is wrong, like the "T" is silent or something, but I can't help it)

Iviofiyiedu - no idea
Hlugnic Labyrinth - hewg-nick?
Djeir - duh-jeer?
Iernian Fracture - eye-er-nee-an

Players whose names I am sure I am butchering in my head:

@Asaraii - az-ZAR-rai
@Eztli - ehz-tuh-lee
@Zhuli - not sure how to present it phonetically, but I can't unsee the mandarin pronunciation
@Zsadist - ...zee-sadist (sorry)

  • Huh, never knew that about Zsadist. I've always straight up just said z-sadist. That... changes things. Slightly.

I said Bahir'an as buh-HERE-ran until I hung out with Erzsebet in person and heard her say BAH-hur-on out loud. That made sense to me, so I started pronouncing it like that until I heard Callidora pronounce it buh-HERE-ron over Skype. Since Callidora's house leader, I figured that trumped. It's still not quite how I used to say it anyways.

Chakrasul has got to be a "chock" sound to me, because that's the same way I pronounce chakra.

For myself, I used to say my own name as kuh-REE-vuh, but without any prompting I found out multiple other people were saying KAR-i-vah. Since it seemed pretty unanimous, I'm willing to say I was wrong about pronouncing my own name, and now I say it the second way out of habit.

Hearing things aloud for the first time is always bizarre, every time.

(On that note, pulling from Zsadist's list, I don't now how Xuihcoatl is intended to be pronounced, but the "coatl" part makes me want to read the X as a ch sound.)

I've always said Bahir'an as BAH-here-ahn since I know Zoharim's player kind of ripped a lot of his word/names off of Hebrew names/words. Zohar and Bahir both come from Kabbalistic stuff, and Bahir (From the Sefer Ha'Bahir, or Book of Brightness, which makes absolutely no sense for a vampire house that's supposed to be all darkness and stuff) is pronounced BAH-here there, so I just kind flip the 'ahn' on at the end.

    Hlugnic Labyrinth - HLGNIK
Djeir - Duh-zjheer (english doesn't really have A LETTER for that sound)

Edit to add: I've always said it zay-dist.

  • SaritaSarita Empress of Bahir'an The Pillars of the Earth
Ok, since I chimed in above, I'll add a few.

The way I've heard Sarita's name in my name has kind of changed over the years, in part because she's had an evolving accent and has actually started pronouncing it differently herself. Originally, to reflect the fact that she didn't grow up in a single place or with a single group of people, she had a kind of unique accent that was borderline singing rather than talking (she also spent most of the time between ages 11-18 alone with wolves.)
    Original: ser-Reet-uh
Now: Sah-Ree-tah (flipped T, syllables are designed to flow well into her version of Bahir'an with a duh Duh duh Duh duh etc. sort of emphasis)

    Abhorash - Ab-oh-rash (silent h)
    Zsarachnor - Zzz-sar-ach-nore
    Iosyne - Eye-oh-seen
    Chakrasul - Chahk-rahs-uul
    Slyphe - Sly-fee
    Omei - Oh-may
    Oleis - Oh-lee-is
    Razmael - Raaaaz

    Duiran - Doo-ear-ehn
Iviofiyiedu - Eye-vee-oh-place in the shamtotas
    Bihrkaen - Brrrr-kay-ehn
Hlugnic Labyrinth - I don't really know my way around there either.

Pachacacha - Puh-cha-ka-cha. I also do it to the beat of invisible maracas. Ole!

  • MarienaMariena By a lake.
Oh man, I love pronouncing things and making people do the same. Mariena has had several iterations over the years. Originally, it was supposed to be Mah-ree-na, but I flipped back and forth between that and Mare-ee-enna and a weird time that it was Mahr-e-ahna. Most the time, 'Mare-ee' is everyone's shortened version of it, so 'Mare-ee-enna' won out as the long version of the name.

    Now, in no particular order:

    Slyphe- Slife (like life)

    Omei - Oh-my or Oh-may

    Iosyne - Eye-oh-sign

Duiran - Dur-e-ann (said kinda fast)

Esterport - Est-er-port (that one was easy!)

    Mamashi - Mam-ash-ee

    Itzatl - Its-at all

    Saluria - Sal-oor-ree-a

    Abhorash - Ab-or -rash

    Aryanne - Air-ree-anne

    Shaman - Sham-wow

    Sentaari - Sent-ar-ee

    Indorani - Indoor-on-ee

    Aetolia - A-Toll-ee-ah

    Albedos - Al-beh-dose

    Praadi- Prahd-ee

    Rajamala - Raj-ah-mah-la

@Areka If you'd just done a ck, that would have changed my pronunciation to what you intended. Single "k" usually has a long vowel in front of it. If there's a short vowel, we spell it with "ck" instead.
