Our design philosophy for this change was one that's driven us at every level of Aetolian development; that is to say, how could we make it easier for player-killers to interface with the roleplaying side of the game without killing everything that used a custom emote?

In many of our initial field tests, attempts to make emoting more palatable to player-killers - making the ability to custom emote a purchasable artifact, making it a miniskill, granting lesson bonuses for emotes - actually backfired, as once the ability was no longer universally accessible, our control group continued to use custom emotes, while the test groups of player-killers and roleplayers responded with heightened animosity and a tendency to hurl infantile slurs at one another.

Clearly, we needed another solution.

This is the first step in a noble experiment; where instead of bringing the player-killers to the roleplay, we'd bring the roleplay to the player-killers by force. We also believe this change has the added benefit of encouraging roleplayers to step up their game, because here at Aetolia, we believe in challenging our players and respecting their intelligence and resourcefulness.

We know that the change thus far has proved controversial, and there are definitely some bugs to be ironed out, but one day we hope to have a system so sophisticated that all dialogue during love scenes will be replaced by emphatic praise of Haern's macho-man prowess.

You should consider changing stupidity to instead use a custom emote system similar to this AI - perhaps one that, instead of me hitting you with a halberd, would instead have me emote the attack. This way, all fights can be made to contain as much RP as each party desires - want more RP in your fights? Afflict with stupidity!

In keeping with Aetolia's recent commitment to social justice, we do not want to implement a change that would correlate roleplaying with mental deficiency. We feel that this is dismissive and erasing of a major portion of our playerbase...

...even though we tentatively acknowledge that it would, in fact, be an accurate portrayal.

To summarize, we may implement this as a feature, but we would first have to change the affliction name to 'temporary mental impairment' so that no offense could be construed from doing so. We are very conscientious about such things in Aetolia.

Can we please rename problematic afflictions such as broken limbs, anorexic, etc.? There's nothing broken about being physically challenged; it's an ableist slur. When my legs are broken I want to be notified that I just received the "handicapable" affliction. Of course that doesn't address how offensive it is that I'm apparently completely incapable of executing an attack from the ground like those people with their standing privilege...

Any chance we can turn if off when talking in Webs? Since they are mostly ment as an OOC medium anyways, it's kinda annoying when every second or third WT is getting highjacked by the new system.

Otherwise, I like it. Seems well thought out and something that can be tweaked and expanded in the future. Nice job.

Webs can be used an OOC and IC medium by our players. As such, I would not expect to see it removed from webs as we are hopeful to promote and encourage roleplay in all forms. Expansive roleplay is our goal!

Perhaps this system could be expanded upon to handle situations where characters are 'daydreaming' - little is more jarring than going to speak with someone, only to have them not respond at all! Maybe players could politely inquire about your day when GREETed, for instance.

We actually had plans to expand this so that PKers would randomly intersperse their shouting matches with emotes. We have painstakingly researched these emotes and the basis for them by doing motion-capture from movie stars such as Keanu Reeves, Sir Patrick Stewart, and Nicolas Cage, and used the Advanced Roleplay System Enhancer to convert their physical behavior into well-written text. So far we have three flavors of emoting style - James Joyce, Edgar Allan Poe, and Chuck Palahniuk, but we're working on incorporating Aesop in there someplace.

Field tests have been very, very promising, although we had difficulty with the Palahniuk AI consistently breaking our language rules.
