If reading A Song of Ice and Fire has taught me anything, it's not to get into a world when the author is still writing the series >.>
I agree to an extent, because waiting a year for the next book in a series is pure torture, but the build-up to it can be good imo.
A year?? His last took 5 damn years to come out. If George R.R Martin enjoys anything, it is torturing his readers, especially by killing off the heroes in the book while the "bad guys" chuckle with a cup of wine.

6 years for Dance with Dragons. Feast for Crows took 5 years. He has essentially taken 15 years to write 4 books.

I have never read any of his books, my example was in regards to a series like Dresden Files. The Game of Thrones series has been hyped up too much imo, and I feel like I'll just end up disappointed if I were to try and get into it. I think I can wait a decade or more after all the hype has died down.
Or like Harry Potter. Damn, JK Rowling was a beast and cranked out 8 books in seven years if you count that children's story she wrote on the side while she was writing the Harry Potter series.

Heh heh. If you haven't read the books and only watch the show, you're gonna think back to your "bad guy chuckling with a cup of wine" sentence and laugh next season.
@Setne Game of Thrones (the series is actually called A Song of Ice and Fire) is FANTASTIC, and GRRM is IMO the most skilled fantasy author I have ever read. His characters are amazingly deep and complex, far more than any other series. He also breaks all of the fantasy cliches with his work. It's well worth the hype, you should definitely pick it up.

It was actually 10 years. The first one was publish in 1997 and Deathly Hallows came out in 2007. It was 3 years between book 3 and book 4 because she got remarried and had another child...Sorry, I'm a big Potterhead.
EDIT: @Elwyn - OH! That's right! I had completely forgotten about that!

I thought the same about Pulp Fiction, and while it was a good movie from what I saw, it just didn't live up to the hype and I couldn't finish watching it.
Ice and Fire is a good series. I enjoy it a lot. I think watching the series really enhances the books. The show smooths out some of the flaws and adds a lot of vibrancy where things fell flat.
My favorite fantasy politics series is the Wurts/Feist collaboration the Empire Trilogy. It's smaller scale politics, following only one woman, but it's a really enjoyable read.
Zelazny takes the cake for best fantasy author in my mind. I adore his work - it's quirky and beautiful and he switches from epic to witty back to lovely seamlessly. His ideas are also really COOL.
The show definitely adds to the series itself. George R.R Martin helps write the script and reviews it each time before it goes out. He likes to add little hints and changes in the series that book-based fans will gasp when they see. He even has things in the script change to how he would have preferred he made the series go, or adds more flavor and color to characters. Sansa was extremely plain and dull in the books, thankfully they made her a bit more interesting in the series (though still a girl only seeing unicorns and rainbows. Yes that is actually unicorns -,-)
For example, the series makes it pretty clear that Loras and Renly had a relationship, books hinted at it but never really outright showed it. Poor Renly. Why are you so mean GRRM! WHY!
I love that this is a sign our culture is changing and its about damn time.

My 2 year old! Had a crappy day at work! I come home, flop down on couch and she runs in, throws her arms around my neck and says "I love my daddy". Crappy day = Inconsequnetial now
Been having trouble finding work in Providence and money's been pretty tight. My landlord just offered to hand out some handywork jobs for me to get a little side cash.
Echoing Nola's sentiments to forumland: Thank you very much for the warm welcome you've given me. It makes my day to get involved with you on the forums and through in-game messages and to (hopefully) be making your experience a little bit more fun. It's my compensation, and it's worth it.

Then I spiked a football, poured Gatorade over my head and moonwalked out of the room.
