We have now implemented the changes shifting novicehood from guilds to cities. While this is going to be quite the upheaval for our experienced players, my goal is to make the switch as transparent for newbies as possible. You'll notice these changes:

Guilds:
 * The guild system code has been essentially rewritten. Guilds now offer ranks 1-5 only, with guildmaster-customizable positions so you can tailor the guild's structure however you like. The other 14 regular guild ranks have been converted to positions so that you can choose what to do about it.
 * The Secretary and Head of Novices positions have been removed. Secretaries have been converted into a customizable position.
 * Guildmasters can choose to make a position show up on your guild's help file, or choose to let it be contestable through the politics system.
 * GUILD PRIVS is rewritten, too, and is hopefully more helpful.
 * Guild novicehood no longer exists as a concept. Newbies will not join your guild until they have passed through the introduction and the city's Academy, OR until they have been promoted by an Amassador. At that point, they will enter their class' guild as GR1 members.
 * Guild probation no longer exists.

Cities:
 * Ambassadors now represent the "Head of Novices" for each city. Ambassadorial aides, therefore, are novice aides.
 * Ambassadors and their aides can now CITY PROMOTE to promote someone out of novicehood (and into their guild) without needing to finish the Academy.

I expect there will be a few issues and unforeseen consequences of these changes, which are very difficult to test outside of the live game. We owe Razmael an enormous debt for his willingness to dive in and help me get this thing across the finish line. Please file bug reports for cosmetic or low-priority problems and ISSUEs for immediate, game-breaking concerns. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to contact me directly or post here.

Aetolia --

I am incredibly proud to announce the release of our game's first completely new class in more than a decade: Wayfarers. Brainstormed by Valdus and Razmael, this neutral-tether class embodies the archetype of brutal warrior. With axe in hand and an eye to the shifting tides of battle, Wayfarers will soon cross over from Albedos to inhabit every city-state on Sapience.

Hemold has agreed to share the skills of the Wayfarer with interested parties. Seek him out in Helba to LEARN WAYFARER FROM HEMOLD for the usual 40cr apprenticeship fee. All apprenticeship requirements are in place, including having a free class slot and having mastered your existing classes. Wayfarer will not be available through the character creation process until our experienced players have had a chance to familiarize themselves with the class.

As you explore this new class, you may discover occasional bumps or rough edges. We'll be making proactive changes over the new couple weeks to remedy combat balance issues and correct errors that present themselves in a live game. Be sure to make appropriate use of the BUG command (HELP BUGS) and keep in mind that if the first word of your bug is the name of a skill (Tenacity, Fury, etc.), it will automatically categorize itself for our perusal.

Get learning! Don't forget our Iron Coin bonus on any credit purchases (www.aetolia.com/Credits), and be sure to message me with any pressing questions.

Some of you may have noticed an email from Matt Mihály, our CEO, which included a call for resumés for my position as producer of Aetolia. Don't be alarmed! In case you weren't around when I first returned, this was the plan from the beginning. I'm not being forced out -- I was here as an interim helper to do my best to improve what I could with Aetolia and set up my successor for continued success.

I'm going to be sticking around through the hiring process and for a month or two of overlap while we get this new person up to speed, so don't hesitate to come to me with your thoughts, concerns, and needs. Above all, I intend to communicate our progress with you and share any tidbit I can of this pursuit.

As always, I am excited for the future and optimistic about what Aetolia has to offer you all.

A New Guild is Coming to Spinesreach

After years of training and careful observation, Eocik, modern founder of the Cabalists, abruptly closed the guild's doors to newcomers. While Eleanor and Akaryuterra carried forth the work of the Council of Yi and chartered their own research, a gap remains for those who would study the Numerological arts anew.

In the weeks to come, a new set of Numerologists will gather in Spinesreach. But this new mission will keep them far from dark libraries and grim ritual chambers. Instead, the Archivists of Spinesreach will branch out into the world, gathering items useful to their research and discarding anything or dispatching anyone who stands in their way. In new discoveries and developing events, the Archivists cannot stand by passively -- they must dive into the fray to further their pursuit of power. They twist not just the fabric of reality around them but their own bodies and the bodies of their enemies.

With their addition, the guilds of Spinesreach form a perfect union. The Syssin infiltrate, strike, and open the door. The Archivists emerge, assess what's of value to them, and deal with the next layer of resistance. Their prizes secure, they call in the Sciomancers, who use their elemental power to finish the job and open an exit. Together, on the open battlefield, each group holds its own in different ways.

---

I'm excited to set things in motion for this new guild to form. If you'd like to comment on this thread to share your thoughts, feel free!

+ Is this a guild that might interest you?
+ Do you think its message is something new players could be passionate about?
+ Do you think the idea fits Spinesreach?

If you're interested in joining the fledging guild, I'd encourage you to send me a private message. Let me know what role you might serve in the guild, how you would embody its mission, and where it might go in the near future.

All --

Thanks to those of you who took a moment to welcome me back. Getting back up to speed with our volunteers and staff has been a fun, exciting endeavor. Next, it's important for me to reconnect with you all. With that in mind, I've scheduled a series of meetings for the week between Christmas and New Year's. Given the diverse times and topics, I hope you'll all be able to attend the meetings that interest you.

The first two meetings will be general discussions. One is best suited for Eastern and GMT, with another specifically scheduled to welcome our Aussies and New Zealanders. Next is the PvP-specific meeting, which will help us address some PK concerns, dispel some rumors, and best understand your priorities as combatants. Finally, we'll host a forum specifically for city, guild, and house leaders. All are welcome to attend and observe.

Town Hall
Tuesday, December 27th
7pm Eastern US / Midnight Wednesday GMT / 1pm Wednesday NZ

Town Hall

PvP-Specific Meeting

5pm Eastern US / 10pm GMT / 11am Friday NZ

Leader Meeting
Thursday, December 29th
7pm Eastern US / Midnight Friday GMT / 1pm Friday NZ

While you are always welcome to message me, email me, or engage with me on Aetolia's forums (forums.aetolia.com), I hope you'll take the time to attend these meetings and discuss your thoughts publicly. This is often the best way for us to spread information in Aetolia, and it's a great chance for me to get acquainted with those of you I haven't met yet. Please let me know if you have any questions!

We will be moving stuff from the old forums to the Aetolia website so that you will still have access to those archives.

We have a couple reasons for the change. One, we like these forums better. Two, the IPB forums were trying to significantly increase the amount they wanted to charge us.
