If you have access to another PC, you can likely get a cheapish cable that will connect your old laptop's HDD to the other PC. I had to get one when my last PC died, and it only ran like $12.

Yeah. As was discussed in prior posts, the change was made because it allowed a loophole in how every other artifact in the game, save those that are intended for shopkeeping, works.

I can't exactly speak for Razmael or Oleis on this, but I will say that there is a very, very drastic difference between lending out an artifact for an hour or two and lending out an artifact for 2+ months.
