So, Questing.

How does it actually work? Because I'm definitely doing it wrong. :(

A sea-stained wooden dock.
The afternoon sun shines down, its rays broken only by the occasional wisp of cloud. A conjured and
mist covered wraith is here, eyes glowing blood red. A tall Bloodloch lich stands guard here. A
skeletal Bloodloch soldier stands guard here. Igrar stands about here, toying with his compass. A
bamboo fishing pole has been cast aside here.
You see exits leading north, east, southeast, and west.
[HINT]: Igrar, Captain of the Gral has a quest you have yet to undertake!

Since I can almost never figure out what to say to mobs to get/move along quests, I've long since given up trying to quest in aetolia. I accepted I suck at it and moved on, lol.

That said, I know people do it all the time, so I'm sure it's easier than I think it is and will totally watch this thread to see if I can pick up any tips to maybe try again!

It's not Shadow tether to use corpses when you have no physical form. It would be shadow-tether if I didn't look for corpses, and instead just stole your body from you, yeah? I could switch?

I'm okay if that's the case but it shouldn't tell me there's a quest available if there isn't :( Then I get frustrated because the first 2819773 NPCs have (but don't have lol) quests and by the time I run into one that maybe does have one I can do? I'm at the 'kill everything with a quest notification because quests are dumb' stage, haha.

Also I'm not actually that frustrated/irritated or anything, tone is mostly for humor. I mean maybe a little annoyed. But I also have a fever so that's probably part of it.

Would it be possible at all to only get the quest hints for NPCs with quests we can actually undertake?

Also I feel like there's a rant somewhere here about gold being gated behind a mechanic that (at least for me as a newer player) seems super unintuitive and frustrating and not very fun at all. I mean every time I ask about making gold people say to do quests, but afaik the only way to actually do quests is be SUPER LUCKY at Magic Word Roulette or have someone spill the beans on their go-to route. And I don't like that second option because 1, it creates competition for the person sharing, which incentivizes players NOT to share and 2, in a game with a relatively small player base, word-of-mouth doesn't seem like a good choice for passing on the secrets of making enough gold to fuel my Sect addiction. I mean to fuel a healthy newbie population. And my Sect addiction to pills.

Also yes I'm fishing! But I hate fishing and 100credits is a pretty serious upfront investment, it's not a super friendly way of making gold so that brings us back to quests which I've sincerely tried so many times to get into I promise :( Just can't ever seem to actually DO it without someone spoonfeeding me.

Also I'm rambling I think and I'm going to bed!

I do think one thing needs to be considered now that hasn't before - the gating of quests behind being of a certain living/undead/class status. Unless it's absolutely required, such as something with faction rank to it, I think we need to consider ungating them. This is because there is an achievement for unique quests, which weren't in place then. Also, besides that meta consideration, gives people the opportunity to help where they want and ignore the people of said towne being annoyed by their help. Could in some aspects open up more RP opportunities for either side to show a 'softer' side to them wanting to help the enemy rather than just destroy them. Or, perhaps, that they want to help because they think it'll eventually convert them.

Just some random thoughts on the matter without touching the whole gating of gold thing.
  • Slept on it! Just to clarify my somewhat ambiguous pre-bed post - I don't mind that gold is gated behind quests. I understand the desire to take it away from more easily-automated or 'spammable' things like bashing or whatever. I'm not saying that questing doesn't work! I know it does, or else so many people wouldn't keep saying it. I'm also not advocating for any real change in the questing system (but only because that's a whoooooooole other discussion, I do think it's clunky and arbitrary and not super fun). What I want is to be able to find and start quests with some degree of reliability/consistency without someone else telling me where to go, who to find, and what command to use to get the quest.

Right now, I just don't understand how anyone could argue that organically discovering (the vast majority of) quests is fun or anything other than frustrating. I add that stipulation because in all fairness, I have found a few that were great! But they were literally foisted on me - like that one time I got eaten by a mirror innocently pathing through Azdun in pursuit of a minor.

In conjunction with my above point, I don't at all support the current solution of 'some other player can teach you the quests instead', because of the two arguments I made in my earlier post - to wit, that sharing the quests you know effectively limits your own gain from them (because you'll be competing with someone else for a static reset timer) and that relying on word-of-mouth in a game with a small number of players who could each hypothetically quit and never look back at any moment seems like a bad idea. I'd also add to support my stance that even with the current 'solution', SOMEONE at SOME POINT in time would at least theoretically need to organically discover each quest once. Which really just brings us back to my previous paragraph.

tl;dr Please make finding and accepting quests more intuitive - not necessarily easier, but at least not so...arbitrary.
  • It's also not that hard to auto-quest since most quests are ''kill x things", or "bring y item somewhere else"- I know of a few people who auto quest, and quests are significantly more limited than bashing. Once a quest is done, that quest can't be done for awhile, and there are far fewer quests than bashing spots- you'd see that issue arise if anyone released an auto quester for public use, just right now it's unintuitive enough that only oldbies can use it/abuse it.

I really dislike quests too so I'm not unbiased.

As someone that enjoys questing and used it for a very long time for gold income, I don't feel it's terribly hard, but I do think some quests could be made a tiny bit more obvious with the new quest system, especially with Quest Alerts activated.

In terms of time investment for gold gain, questing is by far the easiest and fastest way to earn gold. It can take me over an hour to get 5k-10k gold from fishing, but in the same amount of time I can earn double or triple that from just doing quests. Yes, most quests have a timer they reset on, but it's usually about 15 minutes to half an hour. Sometimes less. Do the same quests a few times a day for several days and it starts to add up. A few of the more common gold quests had their output nerfed a while back, but they were mostly corpse turn-ins, from what I remember.

Not going to lie, questing can be difficult to figure out because some of the more lucrative quests aren't in bashing areas, and a lot of times requires greeting a lot of NPCs to figure out who needs what. Some quests aren't even the quest system, or don't register properly, or the tasks for completing them aren't super intuitive. For instance, I've run into a few quests where I wouldn't even have known existed because they didn't register until AFTER I had given an NPC something they had apparently been looking for and I had just been giving them stuff trying to figure out what to do.

I still love the quest system, but it does need some tweaking. And I do love that it's an option of earning gold that doesn't eat up a huge amount of time or resources. Sticking them in non-bashing areas also kind of makes sense since it's often NPCs giving you tasks and rewards in the first place, and if you're the sort that likes lore, it can tie into that.

I split gold discussion into its own topic. This one can focus on accessibility/design of quests as Jory's original intention (I think).
  • Is there any possibility of a way to like SHARE QUEST SPINESREACH_CRICKETS WITH JORY or something like that? Where I can basically share an entry in my 'quest book' (that's how I look at the quest system at least) with someone else. That way they get basic information on where a quest starts and such? Or particular guild mobs that we could setup that could give newer players/characters a basic set of quests that we could recommend them to seek out for earning gold early on. Might make the quest system a little nicer for some folks and questing to be a little more approachable.

    More people-eating mirrors desired. Gotcha.

But really: If you know of any quests like this, where it isn't obvious how to get the quest or why Igrar is so racist, I'd be willing to look into it over the next few days. Just submit it as a BUG. It would also be possible to assess quests area-by-area, which seems like it could be a fun long-term project. And I agree with you, @Jory, I want the quests to be intuitive, easy to find(if not necessarily easy to do), and not require getting help from other players.

I'm less fond of doing this, as it removes some of the point to having two(or more) sides in the first place. There's been a desire in the past to add more quests like these(or ones tied to race), but I would want all sides to have equivalent quests, if not necessarily in the same area. So... suggestions! If there are quests you know that are restricted to one side with nothing for the other side to do, Silena wants to know.

These kind of books were banned by previous administrations, I believe. The reason being that people should try to interact more with others and share stuff. Some people hoard knowledge  though, because they don't want their quick gold to be gone when they get there. This is why the quest system is a good thing, along with the hints.

@Silena I think I have a bunch that need to be bugged then. I'll mark my bugs with QUEST in the beginning to make it easier for you to find.

A bit late to the party here, but:

Some of this "no quest sharing information" thing (i.e. people being close-lipped about potential quests and not helping newer players/other players find them) is likely a hold-over from previous generations. I remember being a novice and being very explicitly told that it was against the game rules to give out any quest information to other players. This probably wasn't true? But, I was a novice and I never bothered to look, I trusted my elder players' word on it.

I think this "close lipped" approach is very unhelpful to the game and the players because questing is fun and profitable if you can do it! I get that people don't want to share information on quests they found because they don't want to have to share the gold from aforementioned quests, but that is selfish and not helpful. Are people morally obligated to be unselfish in a game like this? Of course not! Especially not if their characters wouldn't be! But, it might behoove guilds to gather a set of quests out in the world that would fit their guild's theme and offer the basic information of "where to go, what to say" to get quests started for their members. Don't need to spell it out for them, but just giving people the tools to get the jobs started would be SUPER useful!

Alternatively - perhaps have a city quest board? Something with vnums of a handful of places with mobs who'll give you quests that are in line with your city membrship and maybe a keyword or two to say in front of them to activate the quest!

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd find that an excellent way to engage your citizens and encourage people to go out and do things. Also would give the gold-poor noobs a helping hand in catching up to the millionaires out there!

The only reason I'd be close-lipped about quests these days (if I were invested in them, of course) is that the more people who know about it, the more competition I have trying to get gold. Quests are really the only worthwhile way of making consistent gold, these days, unless you want to idle-fish, gamble, or have heavy hands in the shop game.

I mean, give a man to fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll eat forever. Easier to give out gold when you know there is no competition for gold when you need it later.

(I personally don't care too much, either way, but that's a possible reason I can guess for not sharing)

From your "feed versus teach" comment, I assume you're agreeing that there should be something done to teach people how to quest for themselves instead of just relying on the current non-teaching approach of 'figure it out yourself'.

I feel like a board with vnums, mob names and keywords is a good balance between 'just spelling out what to do step by step' and 'figure it out yourself'. I understand that this isn't a selfish approach, as our character might very well be inclined toward, but as city/guild leaders, it really makes more sense for us to enable our members to fend for themselves.

@Zaila, I'd much rather see people actually interacting, and asking IC questions about how to earn gold and through being taught how, perhaps shown one or two, and then send to learn how to help international place number three. I'm all for making sure people interact more.

  • ZailaZaila Pacific Time
@teani - I am all over people being encouraged to interact more as well, but unless people actually do it consistently across the board (which seems unreasonable to assume other players will also be able to do - inconvenient login hours, being busy ICly, etc.) there will be some players left in a lurch. Especially those who are mostly around in low-activity play times or just don't know to ask the question to start with.

I'm not suggesting a list of 50 quests or anything, just a nice little handful to give people a starting point and get used to solo (or group!) questing. It'd be doubly cool if there could be a feature for, like "group quests" - like, if this theorized thing (I am imagining something like a 'jobs board') had "this NPC is looking to hire for a job about (conveniently worked in keywords that'll activate the quest) at VNUM - needs X people". So you could either gather a small group of X people or go it alone if it's just 1 person!

Creating activity, encouraging collaboration, giving poor, lost newbies a direction, stimulating the economy, encouraging exploration and deepening the sense of the world all at the same time!

I AM actually suggesting there just be list somewhere of where all the quests are. Enough quest secrecy and people monopolizing all the ones they know.

2018/03/31 18:17:37: Hey new idea make a list like QUESTLIST that shows a list of all the quests people
can start/areas they're in so that people can actually find them all and level the playing field between
people with ancient knowledge of them and not (Obviously can exclude some)

  • Yeah I feel like current quest knowledge is treated like pvp knowledge of ye olden days. Too much secrecy and hoarding. PvP ended up in a better place when basic information became public and accessible and we all quit telling each other to figure it out yourself. Pretty sure questing would benefit from the same treatment. You don't need to list everything, but a lot more public information would do wonders imo.

This is something we've actually attempted a few times. The problem is how the quest code is implemented... basically, we agree that this is a good idea. We would like to do this. It would require an audit of every single quest in the game, and some code rewriting on all of them.

Honestly, we could really use that! But it would monopolize our resources for 1-3 months. So... it's something we want to do, we should do, but we can't. Yet.

@Tiur Would you be willing to implement something like my super-basic-idea as a stop-gap for this?

It wouldn't have nearly the scope of the other and would really just require each city assembling VNUMS / keywords / Mob names for 5-10 quests related to their city's ideology and a non-decaying sign stuck somewhere in public on the city property. You could even include on the sign somewhere "For more information about these, try asking your citymates!" or something to give a sort of subtle admin-approval of discussing quests more openly.

@Zaila I'd be willing to implement something like this. Probably on the town criers, they can spread the word on what people need help with.

People from each city would have to tell me what quests they want to put in there though.
  • TiurTiur Producer
@Tedrunai Willing if I give you permission, I mean! *shakefist*

Nah, Ted's right. Criers, maybe some library books. Just not so far as a CHELP QUESTS.

We're actually working on a bit of a job board for this type of thing.. but it's not in the near enough future to apply to the discussion well. It won't happen anytime soon enough.

We could certainly make signs to be read, put them up in the market Chantry board / job posting style? Or you cold make a CHELP with the same information, which could then be read from anywhere, not only the one room. Some guilds have them, and there are a few books floating around.
