Aetolia IRC

KiyotanKiyotan spectacular vernacularSummit of the Falconmount
For those who do not know, I have (re)created an IRC room for players of Aetolia to have OOC discussions about whatever. Those of you who are lamenting the loss of the forum-chat are especially invited. We are on the Esper server in the #Aetolia chatroom. If you have any questions, post here, PM me, or message me in-game.
Some may say we've lost our way, but I believe we've not gone far enough.

Be warned that topics vary between politics, tits, cat clips, imgur, music, booties, combat balance, cooking recipes, kvetching, another round of tits, and so on.

Just wanted to give this a bump and reinvite people to IRC. It's a pretty welcoming community, and all cities are represented, so it's not a "lighter chat" or a "darkie chat." Anyone and everyone is invited, and the only rules are that you behave like an adult and do not metagame. There are no kickbans and everyone gets operator privs. So, if you like, stop by. If you have any questions, let me know via PM or in-game message.

Is Serrice still linking furry porn?

N- not... not that I'm against that!

Uh, what website do we download IRC on? And how do we get into the Esper server?

  • I use mibbit. I found it by going into google and typing in 'mibbit, espernet #aetolia".

IRC isn't downloaded, since it's a protocol for chatting.

But the simple answer is that just like Aetolia, you use a client to connect to an IRC server! Mibbit is a great web-based client, and pretty much everyone else in the universe uses mIRC as well. mIRC is free and pretty easy to set up.

You can go here to download mIRC.

In the options screen that pops up, select the EsperNet folder and click the select button. The window will change and you'll be allowed to choose a Nickname/Username and an Alternative in case that name is currently occupied. Supplying your email and real name is not required. Click connect.

From there type /join #Aetolia (or whatever the roomname is) once you've connected. Presto. Done.

    OR

You can use one of the website based sites that don't require you download anything as suggested above.

mirc is free?? They are asking me for 20 bucks to register...

  • LinLin Blackbird The Moonglade
mIRC is free like WinRAR is free.
  • EleanorEleanor FOR SCIENCE
Legit mIRC costs money. IceChat is a free client.

    Really?

...do I just have a bugged version then? All I have to do is wait an extra 10-20 seconds to connect to mIRC as opposed to a registered user who gets to connect straight away after the initial 30 odd days. No illegal downloads or anything.

No, the guy who made mIRC is a nice (and unfortunately economically hapless) fellow, and you may actually keep using the client, as long as you don't mind waiting. WinRAR is the same way - you're meant to purchase the software, because it's not free, but the only penalty for not doing so is a pop-up to harass you.

  • Thanks Lin

  • If you're OK with a browser based client, this here is free to use. It's lightweight and gets the job done without any fuss.

There are also numerous chat clients (Pidgin, Trillian) that let you combine your MSN, AIM, ICQ (lol), IRC connections all in one nice little place!

Yeah, I connect through Trillian, so it looks more or less like the rest of my IM windows.
  • I use Pidgin for my IRC usually. Otherwise, you can just do what I did most recently and type in esper.net into google, which gave me the first result as where I wanted to go. There's a chat now button and it plops you into the server room. From there, you just type /join Aetolia and voila!

BUMP. It's been unicorns empty lately. Except for a few cool people.
  • I checked it out. Maybe I should pick a time other than 3am though!

I checked it out in the mid afternoon and no one either. Unless I'm doing it wrong... Which is also a strong possibility.

A bunch of us have vacated it after someone DDOS'd one of its occupants.

IRC makes you vulnerable to that kind of thing? I know Skype does, it's a big drama from the WoW PK community. I don't understand why someone would want to do it to someone from Aet, though, that seems just randomly malicious. O.o

Esper.net has disabled several of the safety modes that you can use to at least better protect your IP and OS information. But yes, someone did it, and it was a malicious thing to do, so some of us have shifted elsewhere. The determined will always find a way though. It's just unfortunate that it's cropped up in our community.

Well where's the new hangout then?
