Could Tower Defense be Fun in a MUD?

StrungStrung Halls of Hades
After decades of gaming, I've come to a humbling conclusion: the most fun you can possibly have in a computer game is tower defense. The instant and repeated satisfaction of saying "I built that" as wave after wave of foolish minions get splattered by your fortifications just can't be beaten.

This got me to thinking, what are the limits of the amazing tower defense genre? Could a spammy tower defense game even be fun in the MUD format?

I can imagine the walls of text going by:
Three gremlins are running towards your base!
First gremlin was narrowly missed an arrow tower!
First gremlin was shot by an arrow tower but continues to limp along...
First gremlin just got IMPALED by an arrow tower! He's dead, Jim.
+5 gold
Gremlins two and three trample the first gremlin's body as they continue to rush down the pathway.
Second gremlin was frozen solid by a Mage tower!
Third gremlin was shot by a cannon tower: BOOOM!
Second gremlin took splash damage from a cannon tower.

Just think of the gold sink potential here. Get on it, guys.
I am such an aaaalllphaaaaaarrrgh.

  • Whether tower defense is more fun that other genres is rather subjective I'd say. I'm sure something like that could work in text, if you sort out problems with how to display positioning.
